Promiscuous drink mixing last night, cigarette smoke and turning streetcars in the wee hours of the morning, and a two-hour meeting do not make a happy Electric Landlady. But the party was fun and the meeting was productive, and I just had a chicken shawarma sandwich and I feel MUCH better.

Any time [livejournal.com profile] crankygrrl and I get together and have more than a drink apiece, we inevitably feel like singing. We don't always let loose, but in the bosom of her family and friends it's a different story (although I think we freaked out her father's girlfriend at first).
We had:
Barrett's Privateers (of course)
Fairytale of New York (which might work better if we could settle who gets to be Shane and who gets to be Kirsty, but never mind)
Dirty Old Town
On Ilkley Moor Baht'At
Black Velvet Band
House of the Rising Sun
and of course, Mercedes Benz
There may have been more. If we do nothing else, though, we really have to learn more of the words to these.

Personally, I think all parties should involve singing.

Right, to work.

I think I need a "boozing" icon. Anyone feeling creative today?

Hmmm, probably I should be Shane and you should be Kirsty, 'cause Kirsty is your goddess -- only fair.

We sing when drunk too. And sober. And when we don't think anyone else will notice. Unfortunately, that's mostly me, my husband, and one of our Irish-blooded friends. The rest of our friends run screaming from "The Black Velvet Band" which inevitably appears after the third or fourth drink.

Works for me! You'll have to learn the intro.

I like that icon... *eyes the icon thoughtfully*

Hmph. Can't think why they'd run screaming...

Go figure! Especially since we know all the words. Then we launch into "Wild Colonial Boy" and "The Gypsy Rover" (with it's popular A-dee-doo refrain, singable regardless of numbers of Edelweiss consumed) and finish with a rousing version of "Minstrel Boy"! Sometimes, if we remember we have jobs, we also sing "Sixteen Tons".

We also hit the Wild Rover and the first and last verse of Lorelei and Dirty Old Town... it's not a proper piss-up until you've done at least two or three Pogues covers...

Ha0 ha! I only know the Roger Whittaker version of Dirty Old Town. Providing me an amusing mental image...

How could I forget the Wild Rover? *slaps forehead*

I think that's what blew out my throat...

Oooh! "Sixteen Tons" would be an excellent one! My uncle requested "There Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" but I really, really don't know the words to that one.

Boozing icon, eh?
What do you like to drink?

I am feeling creative, but I'm at work. I can mix you up something when I get home.

Yeah, it's a good one. And Skarps knows all the words.

oh dear. mixing drinks bad. BAD, I tell you. Champagne NEVER mixes well with other drinks. Well, it does, but it leads to a painful next day. And I must warn: I am not of the singing persuasion, so you may find yourself doing solos down in Mexico! I will be a warm and appreciative audience, but there shall my participation likely end. me=shy. ;)

Ah, Janis. "Mercedes Benz" was belted at the top of my lungs many a drunken walk home when I was in college and grad school. It is a truly great song, because you don't have to sing it well.

ELL and I once horrified a group at a sing-a-long we attended by performing the twangiest version of "Mercedes Benz" possibly ever. After that nothing we said could convince them that we did it on purpose and actually could sing tolerably. =]

Good times. There was also a chorus of Concrete Blonde's "Tomorrow Wendy" on the beach the night of my 21st birthday party. 8D

Oooh. Thank you!

What don't I like to drink? (Well, come to think of it I'm not actually wild about sake.)

I like to drink:
Guinness
Any decent beer
Wine
Whiskey
Girly drinks (when the occasion calls for them)
Martinis

Although I do try to aim for only one of the above (OK, maybe two) per evening.

No problem, and out of the Pogues songs you guys should try 'Turkish Song of the Damned' it's my favorite.

Ok didn't do any beer ones, I didn't like the way they turned out. It's all vodak and wine, I could live by that myself. I'd miss beer, but not that much.
Some Absolut ones:

Don't know if you really like Bowie, but you should.

The wine:

Drink and enjoy, they have a good nose.

I know this about champagne. *sigh* The trouble is, I never remember it after I've had a couple of glasses of the stuff.

But it's fun...

It's my favourite singing-in-bars song! Except for the blowing-out-my-throat bit. "Me and Bobby McGee" is good too. I once astonished myself by doing a quite respectable karaoke version of that, including the "la la la" bits at the end.

Indeed. I just will ALWAYS remember not to mix it with tequila. MMMM. Tequila. My uncle said there is a tequila factory that is worth touring in PV. MMMMMM. tequila.

But I vote for Sunday lazing on the beach. And personally, I am thinking Mass in spanish could be fun :D.

Welcome, I added the hangover one as a bit of humor, gross humor as you say.

Did you ever recall 'Turkish Song of the Damned' or do you want me to send it to you?
