My aunt reports:

Today for lunch, Gill, John and I had Thai egg curry with asparagus and peanuts, and a fresh pineapple garnish.

Gill is almost finished priming the hall. John tightened screws, so that William could finish mudding Jen's bedroom. He also bought lumber for Jen's kitchen ducts--see Jen, there is hope--and worked on Robin's countertops.

William worked on the bay windows.*

The neighbours to the south are selling. The neighbours to the north** have just done so. John is wondering about his body odour.
Cheers, Helen.
*The bay windows on the south side, one above the other, have sagged, so the window frames are no longer rectangular. Apparently this involves holding 'em in place from the outside, cutting out most of the window frames on the inside, and rebuilding them. The theory is that they have had 100 years to sag as far as they're going to. I am not explaining this well, but of course I haven't seen it.
**or, as I prefer to call this neighbour, The Harridan

John should worry less about his body odour, and consider more whether or not he missed his calling! His work (and that of the whole crew of hooligans, owners, and parental units) has done a SUPERB job of raising property values in the immediate vicinity and should be appropriately credited!

Maybe I should check out the selling price. You never know, I could buy the house and move in before you do!!! (and be killed in a mysterious accident but hey!)

I think John should get a small bonus for driving them out. I'm just sayin'.

I did not share this anecdote at the time, but the weekend before last when we were sitting outside taking a break she informed me and my parents quite calmly that (1) the soundproofing between our house and hers isn't much good, (2) she's wanted to kill us quite a few times, and (3) she's quite glad to be leaving, actually.

It didn't occur to me until later that afternoon that gee, in that case I'm glad you're leaving too, bitch! (And wrt (1), as [livejournal.com profile] crankygrrl and her mother pointed out, gosh, shame she didn't do anything about that when SHE did HER renovation, isn't it?)

I think you're right, a bonus is in order.

Apparently, according to her she could hear the previous owners of your house in the morning hacking, spitting and generally making all sorts of good noises... so this is not actually all that new of a problem for her. So the fact she never chose to do anything about it for damn near 10 years I think speaks volumes about the kind of person she is. She seemed like she was nice enough, but just kind of feckless and more willing to complain than fix.

I really don't know what to say about her wanting to kill us. Well, except maybe that its not our fault that the house was in such bad disrepair that gutting it was a small mercy to the spirit of the place. I don't think there was anyone who would move into the house as it was, renovation or utter demolition were your two choices neither one all that quiet.
