So I have been disciplined and I have copy edited 60 pages today and I just want to say OY WITH THE ITALICS, PEOPLE! Seriously, if you're that worried about your pearls of wisdom getting lost in the thicket of extraneous words around them, it's better to cut the extraneous words. When you have to start using bold italics on whole paragraphs to make the extra-special pearls stand out, you have a problem.

I have got rid of them ALL. Ahahahaha. I haven't deleted the extraneous graphics, although I was tempted, but I've put in little comments to the effect that "you don't really need this, it doesn't add anything." So we'll see.

hmmph.

electricland: (house plan)
I learn to my displeasure that not only did I not get a house update today, but the Hooligans aren't working tomorrow and hardly anyone else is either.

Oh well. My parents and I will be there.

I only got about half what I wanted to get done this week done. Can't figure out if I was wildly overoptimistic or just inefficient. Probably a combination of both as usual. Oh well -- at least I've finished one job that's been hanging over me. And it is, after all, Friday.

On the downside, nobody has yet shown up to move my keyboard tray (it's bolted rather firmly to my desk and I suspect that drilling may be involved or I'd do it myself). Now that I've finally got my act together to complain that it's turning me into a pretzel, it seems rather hard that nothing's been done about it.
electricland: (Alien)
In a bid to irritate myself (OK, so it's research) I just checked Kidfluence: Why Kids Today Mean Business out of the library. I have read the first 5 pages and I am already very scared. When I have some room on my hold list I'll be getting Brandchild: Remarkable Insights Into the Minds of Today's Global Kids & Their Relationships with Brands as well. I have warned my officemates to expect lots of outraged quoting over the next few weeks.

(Are made-up words and subheads a prerequisite for marketing books, BTW?)

Things seem to be progressing... sort of. I need to check on whether my baseboard tiles have been laid. My aunt reports:

Today for lunch we had mussels and focaccia.

Stuart worked on the 3rd floor, but did not come for lunch.

Dan did clean-up and worked on greenboard in Jen's bathroom. John and Dan went to Rona and bought even more greenboard, screws and a sharp knife that John thinks is nifty.

Brian will be asked to put new hole in Jen's bathroom with very fancy saw that sets off the third floor fire alarm, which is an ionization thinggummy, which talks and, according to Dan, also juliennes, slices and dices.

John took two hours off this morning to accompany his lovely wife and Jane to the market, where we bought an ecstatic turkey.

Cheers all, Helen
I'm not sure how I feel about having a talking smoke alarm in my bedroom.

Met with one of the reviewers to decipher the remaining doctor-handwriting which had defeated me. We got most of it but even she couldn't figure it all out (she says she has learned to recognize certain patterns in the notes he sends her, but otherwise has just as hard a time with his writing as I do).

Met [livejournal.com profile] stilldeepwater for lunch. Bought a skinny crinkly purple scarf on the way back, because it's suddenly got cold out. This has helped.

The family has developed possibly the most complicated set of Thanksgiving travel plans ever. I suppose it's lucky we only have 2 cars available to us because otherwise it would be exponentially worse. But really.

Am having a hard time getting motivated for the Friday afternoon of a long weekend.
electricland: (Sigh no more)
my aunt reports:

Today for lunch Gill, Stuart, Dan, Mike, John and I had fajitas and brownies.

The heating consultant's report is ready and John will pick it up.

Stuart if finished the 3rd floor storage area and Gill is nobly scrapping the foam off the floor. Otherwise, Stuart is doing crapola.

Dan and John have been drilling many, many holes (John was trying to think of the Beatles' song) and Dan will run wires this afternoon.

Cheers all, Helen
Shocked and dismayed to learn that my dad is doing crapola, but no doubt there is a reason for it.

Indecipherable doctor-writing continues. Of course I can make out the unnecessary filler stuff just fine; it's the important stuff that's completely illegible. On the bright side, he really gave me very few comments (and a good thing too, considering how many versions this script has gone through).
electricland: (insane iconfly)
Today I am deciphering doctor-handwriting. Pray for me.

(Actually it's going surprisingly well so far. There's one comment that I can't make out for the life of me, however.)

I recently disabled my email rules that send journal table of contents emails to another folder, because I wasn't reading them. Now they come to my inbox. Which is good, because I read them, but distracting, because I generally have no self-control or attention span and MUST READ THEM NOW NOW NOW.

Not quite sure what to do about this.

Very happy reading about the Governor-General's investiture. She's so awesome.

Her speech
electricland: (don't panic)
Betwen the abdominal pregnancy story (strangely, a colleague had been giving me all the horrifying details about abdominal pregnancy only Friday -- that'll teach me to ask for clarification about ectopic pregnancy) and copy editing a chunk of the Pregnancy site that deals with pregnancy complications, it's been quite the curl-up-while-crossing-my-arms-over-my-lower-abdomen-and-making-the-horrified-face day.

Oh, and yelling "Aaaaaagh!" My officemates love me.

Ciao.
electricland: (Alice - huh?)
- Got the helmet column done. As always, turns out my abject panic was unnecessary -- chief editor and ghostwritee both liked it a lot. I wish I was a judge of my own writing. I still think I could have done better. On the other hand, I think that about everything I write, so there you have it. Squeaked through to publish today -- I'm embarrassed at how little time I gave the guy to review it.

- I am behind on almost everything else, but somehow I don't mind as much.

- My Amazon snark has produced results! More than I expected in fact -- all I really wanted was confirmation of my ship date and some reassurance that it wasn't, in fact, going to be May 11, 2006. This is what I got:

Grovelling )

- On a similar note, the This is Wonderland site admins finally got around to noticing the DVD was out. I tellya, fan sites are much more on top of these things.

- They also mentioned that CBC is going to be rerunning "selected episodes" from TiW Season 2 and I know scab TV sucks (TM [livejournal.com profile] pretentiousgit) and I must be strong but aaaaaargh.

- Working on the house tomorrow -- new regime for September!

- I really, really have to pack.

My aunt reports: Chicken and artichoke casserole, wiring, plumbing, all that good stuff )

AAAA I AM DROWNING IN REFERENCES SEND HELP.

I have a draft. I have made my word count. It's pitiful, but it's extant. Once again I really wish I'd talked to someone who knows something -- anything -- about this area before wading in. Dumb.

So here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to go home now, and I'm going to accept that this thing probably isn't going to be published on schedule, and I'm going to massage it next week and talk to some of our injury prevention people, and the world is not going to end. There are many many people in the world who have it much worse than I do right now.
electricland: (Alien)
Vastly minor in the scheme of things, but this bike helmet thing is sucking so. much.

Argh.

Not that I'm doing so well at concentrating, mind you.
electricland: (insane iconfly)
Just sent the following email to the writers:

Hi all!

Please note that as mentioned in our style guide (p. 27), we prefer the "e" spelling, rather than "oe", for words such as fetus, edema, and diarrhea. I would like to extend this to apnea, tachypnea, and any other "e/oe" decisions that may arise. (If you have a good reason for preferring "oe", though, I'm open to argument.)
We do prefer the "ae" spelling in most cases, although that's being eroded by anesthesia and anesthetic and hyperglycemia. It's all so complicated.
electricland: (mouse zombie)
Expect to see plenty of moaning from me over the next week or so. I'm writing a piece on bike (and other) helmets. I am currently buried in information and see no prospect of ever finding my way out again. This is a normal stage in my research process, but it doesn't make it fun.

I am currently deeply in love with the authors of a U.K. Department of Transport study reviewing the effectiveness of bike helmets:

In terms of tone, the bicycle helmet debate can best be described as sour and tetchy. Neither side seems willing to concede that there can be alternative points of view. Both sides can descend into language that reflects little credit for either, for instance, expressions such as irresponsible zealots who oppose legislation find their counterpart in helmet advocates dismissed as do gooders and mandarins of health promotion. This can be disappointing for those seeking enlightenment from the debate.
I was afraid I was the only one who'd noticed...

They fixed my computer!

Happy, happy day!

I would embrace it if, you know, that were easier.
electricland: (Death java)
My computer, it is still dead. *sniffle* Luckily for me, although not so much for her, a colleague is sick today and I'm using hers. No word yet from IS.

Wednesday's house update: actual construction! )

Wednesday evening I visited [livejournal.com profile] monkeycommando and S and the baby, who was fussy but very cute. Did not get any housework done, as usual. Watched Grease instead. Ah well.

Wednesday was also supposed to be Permit Day, but I haven't heard a word so far. Perhaps I'll call again today. Maybe City Hall is running Windows 2000...?

Thursday's update: another toy )

I have more to say, but no time to say it. Much copy editing to be done. Cottage tonight. Cheers, all...

*sigh*

If you ever want to drive me completely crackers, do the following:

1. Omit to do something that needs to be done.
2. Listen carefully while I ask you to do it and explain why, as a general rule, it needs to be done. Nod brightly and tell me you understand now.
3. Correct the problem.
4. The next time you work on the same task, omit the same damn thing.*
5. Go to step 2.

AAAAAGH!

*Double your pleasure, double your fun: do it right about 50% of the time, but randomly.

Did not look at light fixtures because no available vehicles. Ah well. Instead, we watched Veronica Mars and ate spaghetti and then went for a walk to get ice cream and admire the burnt-out building (I had the apple-pie ice cream in a sugar cone). Tilde very excited about the walk -- she hasn't been getting a lot of exercise lately.

Thursday's report:

Today, I fed the hooligans ham and cheese quiche and Caesar salad. There really wasn't enough. And someone from my family had scarfed the chocolate cake I was saving for David.

The hooligans are working on/ will work on:
- arch on the first floor
- mortaring the holes in the brick where previous owner had put vents, etc.
- placing the holes in the second floor for toilet and sink
- shims on the chimney so that the walls look straight
- second sort-of 'pass-through' on the 2nd floor has had its opening made
- removing the extraneous cold water pipe, which--David thinks--has a cut-off
- rafter ties on the 3rd floor
- drywall against the spindle on the 1st floor stairs.

R, as discussed stained glass beside pass-through OK. No ritual supuko. To check: 16 1/2" wide by 19" tall.

J, who is taking a day off, will provide cheques tomorrow--maybe she's afraid John will run off with the house fortune.

David still has nasty scar from wasp sting from wasps' nest at House, which has since been destroyed.

We will be away through tomorrow 10:30 until Monday morning. Stuff to do is on white board.

Cheers, H
Dropped by city hall this morning on my way to work. Permit is still in the hands of the zoning inspector. *eek*

Today I hope to be productive.

My semi-crazy colleague apparently decided not to renew her contract. My boss knew and I guess the office manager knew, but the rest of us were left to speculate about the empty name-plate on her door. Would've been nice if she'd said goodbye. Shame -- when she wasn't being crazy, we got on well.

The ice-cream store did not burn down. It is one building away from the building that burnt, which is not looking so good, although a lot of the antiques actually look OK at a distance. Apparently a lot of other people were also worried, because the ice-cream store was packed. The girl who served my scoop of Bordeaux cherry chocolate in a sugar cone said the fire department didn't let them go into the building until 3 in the afternoon. The burnt-stuff stench is still pretty powerful.

I sat by the reflecting pool in front of City Hall to work on today's Sudoku, which I managed to screw up the first time (it was the 6s, not, as I had previously thought, the 3s and 7s, that did me in). A woman passing with a stroller said "I had to do today's over, too."

I spent most of yesterday helping our taxonomist (we have a taxonomist) create a card-sort test, and most of today working on our fall publication schedule, which has fallen to me. I confess that I am pleased about this, because I love to meddle and I never felt that the e-zine was being run entirely right, and people kept asking me about it anyway. Now it's mine, all mine!

I am unexpectedly going to a wedding in Ottawa, not this weekend but next. I will be going as proxy for my grandmother and parents, who are not going, but also because the bride and groom (another cousin -- told you I had a bunch) thought it was a pity they hadn't invited me. This has meant messing up the schedules of rather a lot of other people, but what the hell. I also need to call my Ottawa friends to see if they can get together and figure out what to wear. I'm at least moderately confident that, having bought three pairs in the last two weeks, I now have enough shoes for this operation.

My sinks and taps and things are ready. I forgot to call the guy back again today, although come to think of it he may still be there. I also called to see how the building permit was coming along, but haven't heard back yet.

I will not be moving this month, which gives me a golden opportunity to clean my apartment.

Veronica Mars is back on CTV Thursdays at 8 (and Sundays at 5), where she should be.

Life, she is pretty good.
electricland: (Sigh no more)
I've been incorporating edits in the script that was taking me forever last winter, and you know what? It's pretty good. Long, though. I can see why it took forever.

Also, the occasional comment of "Great section!" from the reviewer is making me all happy.

So, off for the [long] weekend. See you all Tuesday!
electricland: (Audrey 2)
BRAAIIIINNSSSSS!

Seriously. Picture a bunch of little tiny brains revolving around my head, all with a slightly different area highlighted.

Does anyone out there really care about the bilateral posterior superior parietal lobe? That's what I thought.
